Theatre – costume proposal

For our production of ‘Great Expectations’ I have been appointed the production role of costume designer as a part of the design team.

Our production will be performed on the 16th April 2014 and there are many tasks to complete by this date. Firstly we need to create a plan for what we want each character to be wearing on stage as well as communicating with our director about what they want for the show as well as the budget we have to do it with. At this time we will also need to be going through the script and be looking for any given costume requirements. Outside of lessons we will need to be drawing up costume ideas and doing some research into where the pieces we require can be bought from. These tasks will need to be completed by the 24th march (our second lesson back).

In the proceeding lessons we will begin to finalize costume designs and get fittings from actors we require them from, as well as this we will work with the make-up team to collectively create looks for the characters that compliment both our costume ideas and their make-up ideas. This is a vital element in the design process as it ties all of our ideas together and gives a clearer overview of how the looks will turn out.

As an act 2 design team we will also have to communicate with the act 1 team in order to see how our ideas tie together and if there are any costume pieces that can be used in both acts, or if there are any complications in ideas they have in their act effecting the ideas that involve ours. These tasks will need to be completed by the 31st march in order to allow two more lessons before our show date.

Our lesson on the 7th April will be when we order/collect any costume pieces we are receiving from other places outside of the school, it will also be when we inform cast members of any pieces we require them to bring themselves for the dress run.

The 14th April will most likely be our dress run this will be our last chance to run the show with full costume and prepare for where we will have to place costumes in the theatre and work through any quick costume changes, it will also allow actors to become comfortable in working with their costume.

On the date of our final performance, 16th April, we will have to transport the costumes from school to the theatre and make sure they are all in a good condition when they arrive we will also have to place all costumes In the correct place as well as viewing actors before they go on stage to make sure they are dressed correctly.
